Jurassic
Coast Video Series - Part 2
Ringstead Bay
Ringstead Beach
is protected by a reef, which dries out at low tide, and this makes
it ideal a fair weather anchorage for small boats.
Osmington Mills
Bran
Point
Further West along
the Jurassic Coastline near Osmington Mills, is the intricately weathered
Bran Ledge, part of the Corallian group of rocks which were laid down
around 155 million years ago.

The cliff section here has fossil oil deposits seeping from within,
the remains of what was once a large oilfield.
Ship Wrecks - The Minx
The wreck of the
steam powered coal barge, The Minx, lies on Frenchman's Ledge after
drifting across the bay from Portland Harbour one night in 1927.
Coastal Erosion
The landscape of
Osmington Mills is continually on the move, mud slides and cliff falls
are common, particularly during the winter when rainfall adds to the
weight of the overburden.
Osmington Oolite
Like Bran Ledge,
the Osmington Oolite is also a Corallian rock, and these stretch across
the bay in amazingly straight lines.
Trigonia Clavellata Beds
Also at Osmington
are the Trigonia Clavellata beds. These hold perfectly preserved shells
of molluscs and bivalves.
Sunsets
As always, the video
ends with a spectacular sunset sequence, a fitting finish to this beautiful
coastline of the Jurassic Coast.
